Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track and Field’s James Grant won silver and a bronze at an indoor event in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Grant, an LCCVI student in Petrolia, finished third in the 1000 metre race and teamed with Chase Capes, Alex Fortney and Tayvin Young to capture second place in the 4 x 800 relay race.

Capes won the 1000 metre race while teammate Laura Haggerty won the women’s triple jump with a jump of 9.99 metres.

Adam Broad had a pair of power goal goals and an assist to lead Strathroy to a 4-2 home ice win over Listowel in Greater Ontario Hockey League action Saturday.

Broad, from Petrolia, also had an assist for the Rockets in a 6-1 loss to Chatham Sunday.

Broad has four goals and 16 points in 32 games this season.

William Hull of Oil Springs had two assists for the Rockets against Listowel and Sarnia’s Jaxon Priddle scored twice for the Maroons in its win over Strathroy.

Strathroy is a point behind LaSalle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

George Matsos’ first of three first period goals less than three minutes into the game led the St. Thomas Stars to a 7-0 win over the Sarnia Legionnaires Friday.

It’s the seventh time this season the Legionnaires have been shutout and their 39th straight loss.

Zach Irwin was pulled after allowing six goals in the first period on 21 shots.

Andrew Gaulton played the final two periods and stopped 39 of 40 shots directed his way.

Chatham bounced the Legionnaires Jan. 29, 9-1.

Addison Murphy-Rodgers spoiled Chatham’s shutout bid scoring with 85 seconds left in the third period.

Gaulton made a season-high 59 saves in the Sarnia crease as the Maroons outshot the Legionnaires, 68-14.

Sarnia is home to Waterloo Thursday and visits the Stars in St. Thomas Friday

Steven Stamkos is now the 20th most prolific goal scorer in the history of the National Hockey League.

He scored twice for the Nashville Predators on Monday to surpass Sarnia’s Dino Ciccarelli on the all-time list.

Stamkos now has 609 career goals, one more than Ciccarelli and is one goal behind Bobby Hull for 19th place on the list.

The host Mooretown Flags won a pair of championship banners at the Stanley Taggart Memorial minor hockey tournament.

The Flags beat Lambton Shores, 2-1 to capture the U11 championship and Mooretown got by the Bruce Grey Bulls, 2-1 in the U18 title contest.

Elsewhere, Petrolia captured the U11 consolation title beating East Lambton, 4-2 while the Oilers came up short in the under-13 and under-15 consolation finals.

Several local skaters won medals at the Skate Ontario competition in LaSalle, near Windsor on the weekend.

Former Sarnian Destiny Nicholson, who now trains out of Cambridge, won gold in her category.

Shae Kingdon of the Brooke-Alvinston club and Shaye Torraville of Point Edward both captured silver medals and Jenna Mezenberg of the Watford club won bronze in her event.

Sarnia’s Mitchel Schechinger has been invited to the Canadian Football League combine in Edmonton.

A mainstay on the offensive line for the University of Guelph, is a graduate of St. Patrick’s and the Sarnia Sturgeon minor football program, will showcase his skills in front of league general managers, coaches and directors of player personnel over the three days event from March 27-29.

The CFL draft is April 28.

Legionnaires sign two, Flags three for upcoming seasons
