If you have phragmites clogging waterways on your property, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority wants to help.

Invasive Phragmites is one of the most visible, wide spread invasive species in the region. The reed, which can get has high as 15 feet tall, can form dense stands which limit block the waterway and recreation access to it, block out native plants and can be a fire risk.

The conservation authority is launching a cost-sharing program to help local landowners control and reduce phragmites on their properties in 2026. The authority will cover the cost of the required control measures and equipment, while landowners pay the fees for a licenced exterminator of about $50 per hour.

“Invasive species like Phragmites can quickly overwhelm natural areas if left unmanaged,” said Jeff Sharp, Manager of Conservation Services in a news release. “This program provides the tools and support they need to manage Phragmites on their property and make a real difference for the health of our watershed.”

Landowners interested in partnering with the conservation authority should contact jsharp@scrca.on.ca or (519) 245-3710 Ext. 217.
