Sports Briefs: Harse, Shortt win Lambton College athletics awards

Petrolia’s Gracie Harse and Wyoming’s Kylee Shortt were among Lambton College athletics award winners announced online this week.

Harse was named the Lions’ women’s softball hitter of the year and Shortt was defensive player of the year.

Meantime, Wyoming’s Julia Boelens of the women’s softball team won the top academic award for female
athletes. She had the highest GPA in her course while playing varsity sports with the Lions.

North Lambton grad Emma Munroe has been chosen the female runner of the year for the cross-country squad and ex-Mooretown Flag Wes Brooks has been named hitter of the year for the men’s baseball squad.

Caleb Moya will fly the North Lambton colours on Thursday (April 23) at the SWOSSA junior badminton championships at the HealthPlex at St. Clair College in Chatham.

Moya qualified for the regional event with a sixth-place finish in the boys’ singles finals at the LKSSAA event late last week.

Mike Weir tied for 36th place at the Senior PGA championship last weekend in Florida.

The Bright’s Grove lefty had rounds of 74, 70, 72 and 71 to finish at one-under par.

American Stewart Cink topped the 156-player field with a 72-hole score of minus 19 including a final round 63 on Sunday.

The Point Edward Pacers has announced a series of signings prior to its OLA Junior B lacrosse opener against Six Nations this Saturday at 7 p.m.

The signees include Barrett Hands of Corunna and Watford’s Ryan Bork.
