Kole Chapman will be LCCVI’s lone OFSAA returnee but he won’t be the only Lancer heading to the provincial track and field championships after an impressive meet from their newcomers.
Chapman will be joined by Rayah Minten, Kallee Elliott, Jaylen Helps, and Liam Hackett at the OFSAA Track and Field Championships in St. Catharines that run from June 4 to 6.
The five Lancers secured their place in the provincial championship with top four performances at the OFSAA West Regional on Thursday and Friday in Cambridge.
LCCVI had a strong start to the event Thursday with Chapman, Elliott, and Minten winning their events.
Chapman brought down his time to capture the title in Senior Boys 110 meter hurdles. His time of 14.27 seconds bests his performances in the LKSSAA and SWOSSAA championships.
After winning the LKSAA and SWOSSAA titles, Minten showed no signs of slowing down, winning Novice Girls shot put at the West Regional with a throw of 11.56 meters.
Elliott shared her spot at the top of the podium, tying Eva Andreev of Cameron Heights in Kitchener, with both competitors getting up to 1.56 meters in Novice Girls high jump.
Helps will be the lone Lancer competing in two events at OFSAA after finishing top three in Novice Girls discus and javelin Friday.
Helps finished second in discus with a throw of 27.83 meters and third in javelin with a toss of 31.37 meters.
Hackett will be the other LCCVI representative on the track after finishing second in Novice Boys 300 meter hurdles. He put up a time of 43.04 seconds, which is more than half a second faster than he ran at SWOSSAA.
North Lambton had three athletes advance to OFSAA after strong performances at the West Regional.
Arlee Roder placed fourth in the Novice Girls 400m with a time of 1:01.36, besting her time at SWOSSAA by over three seconds.
Arie Roelands matched his best jump of the year in Junior Boys Pole Vault, leaping 3.40 meters, which was good for fourth in the event.
Josh Smith ran over five seconds faster than he did at SWOSSAA to finish fourth in the Boys Intellectually Impaired 800 meter, running it in 2:30.47.
Anthony Hopkins will be the lone Lambton-Kent athlete at OFSAA after finishing second in Novice Boys discus with a throw of 39.32 meters.
Camlachie’s Keala Pickard and Mooretown’s Camryn Leitch are the other local athletes that will heading to St. Catharines for the provincial championships.
Pickard toughed out the heat in the long distance races. The St. Pat’s runner placed third in the Junior Girls 3000 meter and finished fourth in the 1500 meter.
Leitch, of Great Lakes Secondary School, will be competing in a pair of throwing events at OFSAA. She had a pair of top two finishes at the West Regional, winning Junior Girls javelin with a throw of 37.98 meters and placing second in Junior Girls discus with a toss of 33.09 meters.
