Heather Wright/The Independent

Former St. Clair Township Mayor Steve Arnold will be back around the council table.

Arnold, who stepped down as mayor in 2022 after serving over 37 years in municipal politics including 16 as mayor, will be acclaimed as deputy mayor Monday when the clerk of the municipality certifies the candidate list. Arnold was the only person nominated for the position left vacant by the retirement of Steve Miller.

Incumbent Ward 2 councillors Bill Myers and Brad Langstaff are also expected to be acclaimed Monday. Langstaff has served 16 years in total as a councillor and this is Myers’ third term on council.

There will two elections, across the municipality for the office of mayor, and in the former Moore Township – also known as Ward 1.

Incumbent Mayor Jeff Agar faces a challenge by former banker and business consultant Bruce Gibson for the top job.

There are five people vying for two council seats in Ward One including incumbent councillors Pat Brown, Holly Foster and Cathy Langis. Also looking to win the seat are former councillor Tracy Kingston, who ran against Agar in the last election, and Alex Machan, an emergency preparedness and security specialist who was a local firefighter and has lived his entire life in Corunna.
