The president of the Petrolia Squires has squashed rumours that Canada’s longest continuously running senior hockey club in Canada will return for another season.
“We’re back,” said Dave Connors during a news conference on Thursday night at Crabby Joe’s. “We’re here to put any rumours to rest,” he added, noting that the Petrolia Line eatery will be the team’s major sponsor for the coming season.
Connors announced Brad Wright will return as head coach for a second season along with many players from last year’s lineup, including leading point getter Shawn Waldie, leading goal scorer Norm Leger and captain Jeremiah Goodacre for his 18th season of senior hockey.
The Squires also announced the signing of former Sarnia Legionnaire all-star players Davis Boyer and Kyler Keating and Wallaceburg native Ryan Lounsbury.
Petroloa will open training camp on September 1 in Mooretown and the curtain will rise on another season in the Western Ontario senior circuit on Friday, October 2 vs. Milverton at the Greenwood Recreation Centre at 8:30 pm.
Coach Wright says on paper the Squires should be a stronger team this season than last.
