The Wyoming Lions and the local community foundation are gearing up to raise money to fix the Wyoming Pool.
The pool in McKay Park was built in 1972 and has been a hub for the community for over 50 years with small children learning how to swim and some eventually returning for summer jobs as lifeguards.
But Paul daSilva, director of Public Works, says the pool is in need of about $400,000 of work.
That includes replacing the pool liner, upgrading pumps, filters and automated controls, replacing the pool deck and upgrading the change rooms and washrooms to name a few.
Recently, town staff applied for a grant under the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund. If Plympton-Wyoming receives it, the community would then pay $200,000 for the repairs. That was submitted on behalf of the Wyoming Lions and Wyoming Community Foundation. CAO Adam Sobanski said staff hasn’t heard yet about the grant.
The Lions and the Community Foundation want to start raising funds. “Both the Foundation and Lions have committed to the upkeep and future replacement of the Wyoming Pool in recognition of the importance of the pool to the community,” he said. A committee will be set up including the club, foundation and members of council and community who may want to participate.
