OPP look for changes to Port Lambton crossing
May 29, 2025
There are calls to improve the pedestrian crosswalk in front of Riverview Central School in Port Lambton.
Lambton OPP are asking St. Clair Township to take a look at the crossing after a complaint from a resident.
Helga Beniot sent a note to the OPP after watching an officer driving through the crosswalk while two women and a child stood there.
“Instead of stopping and letting the pedestrians cross, your officer sailed right through,” Benoit wrote in her complaint. “Everyone ignores this crosswalk. Please do better and provide good examples.”
In an email to St. Clair Township, officials clarified that the pedestrians had waved the officer through the crosswalk, something which is “a common practice at this location” according to the officer who travels the St. Clair Parkway regularly.
“I also spoke with the complainant Ms. Benoit, who advised that it is common for the motoring public to travel through the crosswalk while pedestrians are waiting,” wrote Erica Vanroboys of the OPP. “She advised she is concerned that someone will be struck, as there are often people walking the St Clair walking trail connected to this crosswalk. Ms. Benoit advised she brought up her concerns with the Township, but there did not appear to be an appetite to install a controlled cross walk with lights.”
Vanroboys said she shared Benoit’s concerns “there is a lot of pedestrian traffic and people don’t stop.”
Staff has been looking at the intersection. Deputy Mayor Steve Miller asked for a report at the next council meeting.
