North Lambton athlete breaks West region record in Day Two of track and field championships

Emma Smith of North Lambton in Forest broke her own OFSAA West region record in winning the 800-metre intellectually impaired race on Friday afternoon at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London.

She finished the race is 2:58.08 breaking her record set last year by 13 seconds.

Her time on Friday was about four seconds faster than the winning time last year in the event at OFSAA.

Kole Chapman and Meagan Munro of LCCVI continued to shine in hurdle events both finishing second in their respective 300 metre races.  Chapman’s time of 40.91 was just a tenth of a second behind the winner.  Munro crossed the finish line in 47.09 seconds.  

Petrolia’s Rachel Burns, who attends St. Patrick’s in Sarnia, also qualified for the provincial championship with a fourth place finish in the senior girls’ shot put with a throw of 10.52 meters.  She was 12th in the discus final.

Kinser Rivest of Dresden’s Lambton Kent Composite also punched his ticket to the provincial event with a fourth place finish in the junior boys’ long jump at 6.25 metres.

LCCVI’s James Grant was seventh in the senior boys’ 800-metre final with a time of 1:57.32 and teammate Jayden Davis-Lumley was seventh in the novice boy’s javelin with a distance of 43.82 meters.  Jack Willemseof North Lambton was 13th in the javelin final at 37.58 metres.

Xander Knapp of LCCVI was 11th in the novice boys’ 300 metre hurdles in 46.40 seconds and Julia Pegg of LKCS in Dresden was 13th in the senior girls’ long jump at 4.96 metres.   Campbelle Brown of LCCVI was 15th in the novice girls’ 300 metre hurdles final in a time of 53.24.

Chapman, Munro and Hunter Campbell qualified for provincials under the LCCVI colours on day one of the regional event on Thursday.

Athletes from across the province will gather at York University in Toronto later this week for the provincial championships.  The three-day event runs from June 5-7.
