Blue box recycling returns to Petrolia with new provincial contract
November 5, 2025
The Independent
Just one year after wheelie recycling bins rolled into Petrolia, they’re being replaced with blue boxes.
The Town of Petrolia says recycling regulations are changing and part of that is provincially negotiated contracts for recycling. Emterra will now be collecting recycling and the producers of recycled goods will be paying for the service under the Waste Diversion Transition Act.
The provincial organization which negotiated the contract – Circular Materials – set provincial standards for the contract and those rules made blue boxes the collection bin of choice.
Town officials say throughout November, Emterra will bring two 80L Blue Boxes to each home. Your recycling waste will continue to be collected in Waste Management’s green bin with the yellow top until the end of December. Emterra takes over with blue boxes Jan. 1. The recycling will continue to be collected on the same day as your garbage is picked up.
Officials say the town is working with Waste Management and will let residents know when the old recycling carts will be picked up.
