Speed humps may slow Corunna traffic

St. Clair Township Councillor Pat Brown wants to look at speed humps as a way to calm traffic near Sir John Moore Public School.
That comes after a neighbour wrote to council about her concerns about cars racing along Bentinck Drive and St. Clair Boulevard.
“The four-way stop has become a ‘joke’ and more of a rolling stop and at times,” wrote Cheryl Plump.
“The racing/speeding is excessive and at times, speeds of up to 90k/m by the time they reach Sir John Moore Public School. On Bentinck the racing and squealing of tires in both directions is of real concern,” she said adding sometimes the cars can be heard until 4 am.
Plumb says the easiest method of calming the traffic would be speed bumps “to reduce high speeds and (improve) respect for the traffic laws.”
Plumb says many communities and businesses use the raised pavement even during the winter without problems.
“I would encourage council to take this matter seriously before a tragedy occurs.”
Brown shared Plumbs concern during the Nov. 17 council meeting.
“I know major cities have started to use speed humps,” says Brown noting “St. Clair Boulevard in particular is like a straight away that has excessive speed through there.
Brown says the township could find temporary rubber humps to install on a trail basis.
“It’s not a high speed bump that you would see in a parking lot; it’s a lower profile that would just give them enough (to slow down). They recommend them for speeds up to 50 kilometres.”
Council agreed to have staff look into the possibilities for the Corunna neighbourhood.
