If the province needs some pointers on how to meet its recycling goals, it may want to visit Dawn-Euphemia.
A recent report prepared for the township by Bluewater Recycling Association – the township’s waste and recycling provider – shows over the last 20 years Dawn-Euphemia has far exceeded other municipalities recycling efforts.
In most rural municipalities, BRA officials say, about 38 per cent of the waste is recycled. The province has set a target of 60 per cent recycling although the latest figures show only about 25 to 30 per cent of residential waste is successfully recycled.
In Dawn-Euphemia, over 70 per cent of residential waste has been recycled.
In the last 25 years, the townships recycling efforts have saved more than 9.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 35.6 million litres of water as well as 6,236 cubic yards of landfill space.
