The LCCVI Lancers girls hockey team will have a shot at making the quarterfinals after picking up a point on the first day of the OFSAA A/AA girls hockey championships in Cobourg.

The Lancers rebounded from a tough start to tie Burlington Central High School 1-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Emma Canivet buried a breakaway chance 1:55 into the contest to put Burlington ahead.

Ella McCallum goes to celebrate her game-tying goal with her Lancer teammates.

LCCVI controlled the play from there and had several great looks but were unable to get the puck past Burlington netminder Kennedie Redwood.

The Lancers finally broke through with 5:12 remaining in the second period when Ella McCallum found a rebound in the slot and shovelled by a backhand in for her second goal of the tournament. Hallie Whiting and Olivia Minten drew assists on the game-tying goal.

LCCVI’s Rylan Hall makes a move on a breakaway against Burlington Central goalie Kennedie Redwood.

In the third period, LCCVI had great chances but Redwood stood tall for Burlington, stopping Rylan Hall’s breakaway chance just over three minutes into the frame and stretching out her pad to deny Mya Thorne in tight with ten minutes left.

The Lancers nearly found the winner late when Meagan Munro’s point shot clanged off the post with 30 seconds left.

Chloe Reid was solid in net to help LCCVI secure their first point of the tournament.

Earlier in the day, the Tiller twins powered Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School (St. Catharines) to a 7-2 victory over LCCVI.

Caileigh Tiller potted five goals and added two assists while her sister Chelsea Tiller put up a goal and five assists.

Holy Cross scored two goals in the first five minutes to grab an early advantage.

McCallum brought the Lancers within one but Caileigh Tiller would restore Holy Cross’ two-goal lead before the buzzer sounded to end the first.

Minten found the back of the net early in the second, cutting LCCVI’s deficit to one.

That was the closest they would get as Holy Cross scored four unanswered goals to close out the game.

LCCVI have a chance to make the playoffs heading into their final round robin contest.

The Lancers would need to beat Crestwood Secondary School (Peterborough) when they play on Wednesday morning at 10:00 am and would need Holy Cross to take down Burlington Central in their game at 10:15 am.

If everything breaks their way, LCCVI would finish second in Pool B and play in the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.
