The Lambton Attack U15 ‘C’ team took home a silver medal and the Sarnia Lady Sting U11 ‘C’ team won a bronze medal at the OWHA Provincials this weekend in the GTA.
The Attack went unbeaten with wins over Flamborough and Woodstock and a tie against Stratford in the round robin to advance to the semifinals.
In the semis on Sunday, Lambton won a tight 1-0 game against the Chatham Kent Crush. The Attack were on the wrong side of a 1-0 game in the final, losing to the South Bruce Blades.
The Sarnia Lady Sting won their group to move on to the semifinals. The U11 ‘C’ team got shutout victories over Kanata and Huron before playing to a 2-2 tie against the Russell Coyotes in the round robin.
On Sunday morning, the Lady Sting fell to the eventual champion Gananoque Royals 4-1 in the semis. They recovered in the afternoon, getting a 3-1 victory over Saugeen Shores in the bronze medal game.
The Sarnia Lady Sting U11 ‘B’ and U18 ‘A’ teams also made the elimination rounds.
The U11 ‘B’ squad went undefeated in the round robin, getting convincing wins North Durham and Barrie before booking their spot in the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Norfolk. The Lady Sting would fall 2-1 in a tight quarterfinal battle against the Ottawa Valley Thunder.
The U18 ‘A’ team won their first two games over Napanee and Burlington then tied their final round robin game against Ancaster, which was enough to advance them to the quarterfinals. They got a tough draw in the quarters, falling 3-1 to the eventual champion St. Catharines Brock Jr. Badgers.
This team had a strong contingent of players from LCCVI’s girls hockey team that won antique bronze at OFSAA. Ainsley Bennett, Natalie Duncan, Noelle Edgar, Heidi Shaw, and Sadie Williams all suited up for the Lady Sting.
The Sarnia Lady Sting U13 ‘C’ team, Lambton Attack U18 ‘B’ team, and Lambton Lightning senior ‘C’ team each won multiple games in the round robin but didn’t advance past the group stage.
The Bluewater Hawks U18 ‘AA’ squad, which included Marthaville’s Meagan Munro and Mooretown resident Camryn Leitch, went unbeaten in the round robin, picking up wins over Sault Ste. Marie and Central York.
Bluewater tied the Oakville Hornets 2-2 in their second game, which left both teams with identical records and goal differentials at the end of the round robin. Despite that, it ended up being Oakville who won the tiebreaker to win the group and move on to the quarterfinals.
In total there were 15 local teams that played at the OWHA provincials. The Lambton Attack, Lambton Lightning, Mooretown Lady Flags, and Sarnia Lady Sting were the local organizations that sent teams to the championships.
