Community fundraising effort will pay for the equipment, province to pay operating funds

The Independent

Bluewater Health will be getting another MRI.

In a news release Friday, Bluewater Health officials said the hospital completes 12,000 MRI scans each year, with the demand for imaging growing in Lambton and across the province.

The additional MRI will improve access to care, reduce wait times and help diagnose and provide treatment to patients sooner.

Hospital officials call it a “significant investment into the future of health care in Sarnia-Lambton.”

The province has committed to spending $800,800 for operating costs for another 2,080 hours of service. Bluewater Health Foundation will be raising the money to pay for the MRI in the community, although details of the campaign haven’t been released yet.

It’s expected the community will have to raise about $3.5 million to $4 million for the new equipment.

Planning for the second MRI is already underway. Following renovations and installation, the second MRI is expected to become operational by mid-to-late 2027.
