Sports Briefs: Express finish third at U17 tourney

The Enniskillen Express finished in third place in a rain-shortened U17 girls’ fastball tournament in Mitchell.

The Express beat teams from Goderich and Exeter but lost to the Sweaburg Storm to finish the tournament with a record of 2-1.

The Corunna Giants U11 girls’ fastball team won silver medals at a tournament in Chatham last weekend. 

They went 3-1 in round-robin play with victories over LaSalle-Green, Chatham and LaSalle-Gold. LaSalle-Gold beat the Giants in a hard-fought championship contest.

Hailey McFadden and Georgia Coffin of Dresden along with Evelynn Mumby of Sarnia, went 4-0 with their team Macomb Shock 14Ub during the USSSA State Championship in Michigan before getting rained out.

The Shock is currently the top-ranked team in its category and division in Michigan and rated fifth in the U.S. national rankings.

Former Petrolia Jet Pat Lea is being inducted into the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame in October.

During his career with the Point Edward Pacers Jr. B lacrosse team he was part of two Ontario championship teams and three Canadian championships. He also played Senior B lacrosse in Owen Sound, Wallaceburg and Sarnia, as well as Major A lacrosse with Brooklin, winning multiple provincial and national championships with those organizations.

The Point Edward Pacers open OLA Junior B lacrosse playoff action in Guelph on Friday.  The Pacers host game two of the best-of-five series in Point Edward on Sunday, Father’s Day, at 3 p.m.

The Pacers roster includes Jack Stephenson of Oil Springs, Ryan Bork of Watford, Lucas Ross, Barrett Hands and Brayden Hogan of Corunna and Courtright’s Austin Dalgety.  The team’s head coach is former Petrolia Jet Kevin Fines.

Wyoming has moved into a tie for top spot in the Western Counties Senior Baseball League with a 9-2 win over the Corunna Giants at Canton Park on Friday.

After the visitors had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the home side struck for four runs in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again. Mitch Robb, Warren Boersma and Corey Saunders all had two RBI for the winners. Zach Moore had two hits and drove in both runs for Corunna.

Robb was the winning pitcher. Joe Stock took the loss.

A new ownership group has taken over the Greater Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Legionnaires. Shannon O’Connor along with Tate Philips and Anthony Miele are the faces behind the team.

O’Connor, the majority owner, is excited to get the ball rolling on the future of the organization in the area.

“We are incredibly grateful and excited to begin this new chapter with the Sarnia Legionnaires,” said O’Connor.

“We look forward to becoming an active part of the community, building meaningful relationships, and creating an environment that our players, families, and fans can be proud of. This organization has tremendous potential, and we are excited to help guide its future both on and off the ice.”
