Lambton OPP and officers across the province want to reinforce the importance of fully stopping at regulated intersections.

Rolling stops may appear to save time, police say, but it significantly increases the risk of a collision.

“Every time a driver approaches a stop sign, they are making a decision that impacts not only their own safety, but the safety of everyone around them. A stop sign means stop – not slow down. A complete stop provides drivers with the time needed to properly assess traffic conditions,” says Staff Sgt. Julie McLeod.

Even in familiar areas or low-traffic conditions, police say, you can be at risk by an approaching vehicle or a cyclist in the area.

“Taking a few extra seconds at a stop sign is a simple decision that can prevent a devastating outcome,” officials said.

The warning comes after a deadly accident in Wellington County June 12. A van carrying a family of 10 collided with an SUV at a corner. Five children died and the other five family members were hospitalized.
