Sports Briefs: Capes qualifies for World U20 Track and Field Championships

Chase Capes is heading for World U20 track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon in August.

He qualified by winning the national junior 1500-metre final last weekend in Ottawa. Fellow Sarnia Athletics Southwest club members Avery Norland and Duncan Smith also had top five finishes.

Skarlit Worton, who announced her commitment to the University of Minnesota Monday, had to withdraw from the heptathlon due to an injury.

Petrolia’s Charlie Shaw competed in the senior 1500-metre race but did not reach the final.

Nathan Schmidt, Andrew Douglas and Graham McLean, all from Camlachie cracked the top ten in the 10K race at the annual Huron House run on Father’s Day. They finished third, fifth and eighth respectively.

Jackie Stanton of Plympton-Wyoming was the first female to cross the finish line. Mike Kirkland of Brights Grove won the race.

After losing back-to-back contests, the Point Edward Pacers are in a must-win situation in Guelph on Friday to keep their Junior B lacrosse playoff hopes alive.

If the Pacers are able to extend the best-of-five series, game four will be in Point Edward Saturday at 7 pm. The fifth game,
if necessary, would be in Guelph Monday.

Team Truman won the Father’s Day Scramble on Sunday at Kingswell Glen in Petrolia.

Steve and his sons Isaac and Xavier carded a 16-under par, 56 good for a one shot win over Team Joy.

The dedication of a new batting cage and bleachers, in the name of the Druiett family, at Morrison field in Petrolia takes place this Saturday, June 27 at 12:15 p.m.

The day that begins at 10 a.m. also includes skills instruction as well as a minor and senior baseball game.
