Petrolia benefit to help homeless vets
March 2, 2016
Jerry Brooks is hoping to help some veterans who are down on their luck.
The Petrolia man has organized a fundraiser for Operation Leave the Streets Behind a program supported by the Royal Canadian Legion. Through the program, veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless can get financial aid for things like rent, dental bills, transportation to medical appointments, furniture, clothing and food.
Brooks says the idea is the brainchild of Korean veteran Joseph Sweeny after the number of veteran on the streets shocked him. He set up a fund with a goal to have 10 beds at the Scott Mission in Toronto. The fund will support more beds in Ottawa, Hamilton, Montreal, Vancouver and Nova Scotia.
Brooks, a veteran himself, was moved to help and has set up a benefit dance featuring Scott Manery and the Barn Burners at the Petrolia Legion March 4. Tickets are available by calling 519-333-7928.
Brooks adds an account has been set up at the TD Bank (Account #34486278375) for people who want to donate but are unable to come to the benefit.
