Bodies discovered in Petrolia home by OPP doing a wellness check

May 18, 2021

Lambton OPP are releasing a few details about the discovery of two bodies in Petrolia.

But it is still not clear how two people died inside a home near the downtown.

In a news release, police said they went to the home at the corner of Portland and Centre Streets just before noon Monday to check on the well being of the residents.

Police found two people dead inside the home.

At least six police vehicles were on scene including the forensic investigation van throughout the afternoon. The house was roped off with crime scene tape.

Officers could be seen donning personal protective equipment and taking crime scene investigation equipment into the home. A coroner’s van arrived around 3:30 pm and at 4 pm a body was removed from the house. Nearly half an hour later a second body was taken to the van.

Neighbours said an older couple lived at the house but nobody had seen them for several weeks. In the past, neighbours said a television and people could be seen moving inside from the street.

Another told The Independent he had not seen movement in the house since April.
The grass was also long and unkempt, and looked not to have been cut for several weeks. Neighbours said this was unusual as it was usually cut and maintained regularly by the couple’s son

A post mortem is to be completed today to determine their cause of death.

Police say it is “believed to be an isolated incident with no threat to public safety.”

The investigation is being conducted by the Lambton County Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).
