Enniskillen plans to limit how close cannabis operations can be to homes
January 13, 2023
Enniskillen wants to control how close cannabis operations set up to homes.
Monday, the township is holding a public meeting on changes which will limit where indoor cannabis operations will be.
The bylaw says indoor operations would have to be on Agricultural or a Mixed Commercial Industrial zoned land. It would also keep the operation 300 meters from playgrounds, sporting venues, community centres, churches or any other place people gather and sleep.
Any cannabis operators would also need to submit plans to reduce light leakage from the greenhouse. They’ll also have to do studies on traffic impact, noise and air quality if the bylaw passes.
Councillor Mary Lynne McCallum is one of the councillors who pushed to have limits after the neighbours of the now closed High Park Farm cannabis operation on Lasalle Line complained of light pollution and heavy smells when the plants were being harvested.
The grower tried a number of solutions, including using a scent to reduce the odor and installing ventilation units but neighbours said it didn’t help.
McCallum says the changes are “purely preventative” since “there was just so many issues before with High Park.
The bylaw, McCallum says, is modelled after one created by Pelham when it faced odour issues at cannabis operations.
Monday’s public meeting is at 7 pm.
