Flush with excitement: Enniskillen officially opens accessible washroom

May 26, 2023

Enniskillen officials are hoping new accessible washrooms will help breathe new life into Marthaville Park.

The park, complete with children’s playground, pavilion and a ball diamond, was built in 1991.But the washroom facilities were aging and difficult for those with accessibilty issues to use. “They were in need of repair when I was on council; I recall talking about the washrooms,” says Christine Greydanus who was at Marthaville Park as an Ontario Trillium Foundation volunteer as the municipality officially opened the washrooms Friday.

The municipality drew up plans for accessible washrooms to be attached to the pavilion at the park and approached the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The arm of the provincial government approved the $218,800 grant request and the township completed the project with the help of AgriUrban Construction.

Enniskillen Mayor Kevin Marriott is pleased the project is done, hoping it will draw more people to the park.

For Jen Racher, who is part of a Thursday night ladies ball league, the new facilities are welcome.

“The washrooms are a very big improvement over what was here,” she said. “I have had lots of positive comments about it.”

That made Doug Krall, the chair of the township’s parks and recreation committee happy. “We continue to improve the parks for the future and for the present for people to enjoy.”
