Plympton-Wyoming looking for fourth fire chief in seven years

August 19, 2024

Plympton-Wyoming is once again looking for another fire chief.

A brief statement issued by the municipality this morning states; “Please be advised that Erik Campbell is no longer employed by the Town of Plympton-Wyoming effective August 19, 2024. The Town would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavours. As this is a confidential personnel matter, the Town will not be making any further comment.”

Campbell, a former military man, volunteer firefighter and manager of emergency response and planning at St. John’s International Airport in Newfoundland, came to Plympton-Wyoming Aug. 31.

At the time, Mayor Gary Atkinson says 16 people applied for the position including some candidates from the area but Campbell “seemed to have the qualities were looking for.”

Campbell replaced former chief Darryl Thompson who left the municipality after being placed on administrative leave at the same time the former CAO Carolyn Tripp went on sick leave. Plympton-Wyoming parted ways with the chief May 18, 2023, about two years after he took the position.

Thompson became chief after Steve Clemens resigned Oct. 2023 “to focus his efforts on his personal life and to pursue other professional opportunities.” Clemens was hired in Jan 2017 and had been at the helm of the department through a number of controversies including one where a video camera was left on in the Wyoming fire station and when three senior firefighters were dismissed abruptly after an internal investigation.

Clemens was the first full-time chief at the department. Prior to that, now Plympton-Wyoming Councillor Mike Vasey headed up the Wyoming department and Scott Jordan was the Camlachie chief. He retired this summer.

The town has appointed Will Davidson, a captain with the Wyoming department, as acting chief.
