All Canadian Clash in Gold Medal Game At U17 World Challenge

For the first time since 2009, two Canadian teams will meet in the gold medal game of the U17 World Challenge.

Canada White beat Sweden 6-4 in the first semifinal Friday in Sarnia. Mathis Preston led the way offensively recording a hat trick and an assist.

Special teams continued to a big part of Canada White’s success with Tynan Lawrence and Keaton Verhoeff scoring power play goals.

Ryan Lin added an insurance marker in the third. Gavin Betts made 20 saves in the victory.

Canada Red kept their perfect tournament going with a 7-3 win over the USA in the second semifinal.

Sarnia Sting forward Alessandro Di Iorio opened the scoring late in the first with a one-timer on the power play.

Chad Lygitsakos scored twice and Joe Iginla added one in the first 5:15 of the second period to extend Canada Red’s lead to 4-0. The Americans scored on a power play midway through the frame.

Cruz Pavao restored Canada Red’s four goal advantage but the USA wouldn’t go away, scoring twice to cut the lead down to 5-3.

A pair of goals from Parker Vaughan and Brett Olson in the third sealed the win for Canada Red.

Canada White and Canada Red will go for gold tomorrow night at 7:30 PM at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia.
