Voice of Squires, Sting, George Heath dies

George Heath, who was the voice of the Petrolia Squires during the Allan Cup run, has died.

He was also the first play-by-play voice of the Sarnia Sting. The team announced today that George Heath passed away on Sunday. He was 88.

Heath, who came to Sarnia in 1972 to work as sports director at CHOK, was involved with the Sarnia Junior B franchise and the Petrolia Squires prior to the Sting relocating to Sarnia from Newmarket in 1994.

He called the Memorial Cup victory by the Cornwall Royals in 1972 and provided colour for the Royals’ Memorial Cup victory in Windsor in 1981. The Royals were the forerunners to the Sting franchise in Sarnia.

“We wish to send our deepest condolences to the Heath family as well as his friends and co-workers,” said the Sting in a social media post on Wednesday.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sarnia.

A service for will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Sarnia.
