Flyers move back into first with OT win

The Petrolia Flyers has reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since the franchise relocated to the hard oil town from Alvinston nearly a decade ago.

The Flyers reached the milestone with a 6-5 win in overtime against the Aylmer Spitfires on Thursday night at Greenwood.

Petrolia’s previous high win total was 19 registered over the course of the 2017-18 campaign.

Tobias Iantorno had the winning goal, his second of the contest at 3:03 of extra time.

Ryan Richardson and Owen Peters both had a goal and an assist while Noel Sanderson and Andrew Jaques each had two helpers. Cam Davidson and Evan Morningstar also scored for the Petrolia. Elijah Grant made 28 saves for his 11th win of the season.

Lambton Jr. Sting grad Donovan Appleford led the Spits with a goal and three assists, including a helper on the tying goal with less than four minutes to play in regulation time.

Petrolia is now 20-9-3 and leads the Yeck Division by two points over Exeter.

The Flyers play the Bulldogs in Mt. Brydges on Saturday night.
