The Mooretown Flags won the under-13 B tier three championship at the South Huron regional Silver Stick on the weekend.

The Flags won five straight games, including an overtime victory against Lambton Shores in the semi-final. The team downed East Lambton 6-1 in the final.

It was one of two titles for Mooretown at the event. The Flags edged South Kent Lightning, 2-1 to capture the championship banner in the under-18 B Tier 3.

Adam Lane had the game-winning goal in the gold medal game. Ryan Teschke also scored for the Flags. Max Maoirat assisted on both Mooretown markers.

Overall, the Flags went 4-1 with preliminary round wins over Petrolia and the Lightning. The team downed Shelburne, 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Meantime, two other local teams made the finals in their respective division but fell just short. South Huron beat Mooretown, 4-1 in the under-15 championship game and the host team blanked Lambton Shores, 3-0 in the under-11 final.

Evan Van Gorp had his first game-winning goal of the season and fifth of his career as London beat the Greyhounds, 4-3 in the Soo on Saturday. The Watford product also had an assist and now sits sixth in team scoring with four goals and 13 points in 23 games.

With the win, London is within a point of Owen Sound for the Midwest Division lead and has two games in hand.

The win salvaged a three-game road swing for the Knights that had previously lost in North Bay and Sudbury.  London has a home-and-home series with the Saginaw Spirit this weekend.

The Sarnia Sting continued a busy weekend of trading by exchanging power forwards with the Erie Otters on Sunday. Sarnia sent Pennsylvania native Kase Kamzik to his home state for Tyler Challenger. A day earlier they had traded Carter Kostuch to Sudbury for future draft picks.

Challenger, the 10th pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, has a goal and an assist in 23 games with the Otters this season.

Challenger has an arms length connection to the Sting as he and Beckham Edwards were teammates on the gold medal winning team at the World Under-17 Challenge in Sarnia last November.

Adam Broad had his fourth multiple point game of the season; a goal and an assist in Strathroy’s 7-5 home ice win over Komoka in GOHL action on Saturday.

The Petrolia native and former Mooretown Flag and Lambton Jr. Sting now has two goals and eight assists for 10 points in 17 games this season.

With a point in an overtime loss against Stratford Sunday, the Rockets are now within two points of the final playoff position in the league’s Western Conference.

Elsewhere on the weekend, Sarnia lost its 23rd straight game to start the season on the wrong end of an 11-0 game against the Siskins in Waterloo. Waterloo had beaten the Legionnaires, 4-0 in Sarnia Nov. 20.

LCCVI’s Micah Kember of the Sarnia/Bluewater Wrestling Club took second place in his division at an Ontario Winter Games qualifier in Windsor on the weekend.  He still has a chance to be chosen as an alternate for the Games in Orillia next February.

Meantime, Wyoming’s Abby Phelan and teammate Taylor Chad won gold and silver medals respectively at an international wrestling event in Norway.

Emily Van Gorp and the Western Mustangs won silver narrowly losing out to the University of Toronto Blues at the recent Fall Invitational Figure Skating competition in Aylmer.

Toronto won the points title, 73-72.

Individually, Van Gorp, from Watford, was fourth in the novice women’s short program.

The Mustangs continue their season with the Holiday Showcase at London’s Thompson Arena on Dec. 5.
