Victoria Playhouse Petrolia hopes to go back to a pandemic-era practice and serve alcohol to patrons during performances.

Laurissa Ellsworth, Petrolia’s director of marketing, arts and communication, asked council at the Jan. 12 meeting to move ahead with a plan for alcohol service in the balcony.

Ellsworth, in her report to council, says in 2022, as part of the theatre’s COVID-19 protocols to operate while distancing patrons, the theatre offered alcohol service during events to limit the interaction of patrons and reduce the risk of spreading the virus. But it was only offered for a short time.

“Through research, nearly all theatres in Ontario and beyond offer patrons the opportunity to purchase a drink and enjoy it in the theatre,” writes Ellsworth. “Although it has not been common practice for us, we are being asked regularly for the option.”

The VPP intends to send the drinks upstairs in plastic closed containers or cans to prevent breaking and spilling. “These cups, that are used commonly in theatres, are reusable by the consumer and come with a small fee for their initial purchase,” she added.

“This is not likely to increase revenues exponentially, but it is believed that it will provide a customer service option.”

She added the staff are all trained in Smart Serve and will continue to closely monitor consumption.

The VPP first sought, and received, the green light from council and now is approaching the fire department and public health for the appropriate letters to send on to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario for the license.
