Relentless forechecking and strong goaltending from Chloe Reid helped LCCVI take down St. Charles College (Sudbury) 2-0 in the OFSAA A/AA girls’ hockey quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon in Port Hope.

Mya Thorne broke the seal with 2:40 remaining in the first period. She was first player to get a puck past St. Charles goalie Kloe Rienguette who had recorded a shutout in her first two games of the tournament.

Olivia Minten celebrates with her teammates after scoring to put LCCVI up 2-0 against St. Charles College.

Olivia Minten snuck a shot by Rienguette’s blocker on a second period power play to double the Lancers lead. Meagan Munro and Noelle Edgar picked up the assists on the insurance marker.

St. Charles had a few shots in the first couple minutes of the third period but Reid was there to turn them aside.

In the next ten minutes, the Lancers clogged the neutral zone and spent lots of time in the St. Charles end thanks to their relentless forechecking.

The LCCVI players pilled onto goalie Chloe Reid after she recorded her first shutout of the tournament in the quarterfinal.

In the final two minutes St. Charles pulled their goalie and eventually drew a penalty with 1:18 left in the game.

St. Charles had a couple of chances from long distances on the six-on-four but Reid was up to task again.

The Lancers move on to the semifinals Thursday morning. They will take on Georgian Bay District Secondary School (Midland) at 8:15 am in Cobourg.

Earlier in the day, the Lancers got a 5-3 victory in a must-win game against Crestwood Secondary School (Peterborough) in their final round robin game in Baltimore.

Thorne opened the scoring in the first minute, snapping home her first goal of the tournament to put LCCVI ahead.

With 6:20 remaining in the period, Minten walked in over the blueline and blew a hard wrist shot by the blocker of the Crestwood goalie to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead.

Crestwood’s Ellie Lewington responded with 2:36 left in the frame to cut their deficit in half.

Meagan Munro restored LCCVI’s two-goal lead with a beautiful goal, going by her defender and putting it through the five hole of the Crestwood netminder with 10:05 left in the second period.

Crestwood wouldn’t go down without a fight. Lewington made it a 3-2 game in the late stages of the period, scoring her second goal of the morning.

LCCVI replied 25 seconds later when Addison Jubenville came around the net and found an open Rylan Hall on the doorstep, who tapped the puck in to give the Lancers a two-goal lead heading into the intermission.

Lewington made LCCVI fans hold their breath when she completed her hat trick with 1:14 left to cut Crestwood’s deficit down to one goal.

Crestwood nearly tied the game with 25 seconds to go, tipping a puck just over the net.

In the dying seconds, Munro secured LCCVI’s spot in the quarterfinals, sending a shot from her own zone into the yawning cage.

Reid picked up her first win of the tournament in the Lancers net.

Hall was named the first star of the game, putting up a goal and an assist, while Ella McCallum was given the third star, registering a point for the third consecutive round robin game.
