LCCVI made a valiant comeback effort but fell just short, losing 4-2 to Georgian Bay District Secondary School from Midland in the semifinals of the OFSAA A/AA girls hockey championships Thursday morning in Cobourg.

Georgian Bay jumped out a lead when Daelia Coutts buried a loose puck in front with 6:25 left in the first period.

Lila Robitaille doubled Georgian Bay’s lead on a power play late in the opening frame, snapping a shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.

The Lancers were unable to establish their strong forecheck in the first two periods because Georgian Bay’s strong breakouts but LCCVI goalie Chloe Reid kept her team in the contest, making timely saves in the second period to keep it a two-goal game.

Sydney Larmand found a way one past Reid late in the middle frame, extending Georgian Bay’s lead to 3-0.

In the next minute, LCCVI struck back when Ella McCallum came around the net and picked the far side on a power play to cut the Lancers deficit to two.

LCCVI’s power play prowess continued in the third period when McCallum buried a rebound off a Rylan Hall shot with 8:48 remaining to make it a 3-2 game.

The Lancers fans in the crowd tried to spur the team on but Georgian Bay stymied their comeback bid, playing strong defence in the back half of the final frame.

Allie Homick iced the game in the final minute, sliding the puck into an empty net after an LCCVI turnover in their own zone.

The Lancers will play for the bronze medal against the top-seeded team in the tournament, Crestwood Preparatory College (Toronto), this afternoon at 1:15 pm in Cobourg.
