Sarnia Police have charged a 41-year-old London man after a rock telling ‘floor crossers’ to resign was thrown at MP Marilyn Gladu’s Sarnia constituency office.

Police say a man wearing a ski mask went to her office May 28 and threw the rock at the window. The glass didn’t break, but a few scratches were left behind.

Gladu says her staff were inside at the time, helping constituents.

Police were called to the scene by neighbouring businesses and arrested a man immediately.

The Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong MP says this is the fourth incident of vandalism at her office since the former Conservative crossed the floor to join the Liberal government.

“This is hugely concerning. My staff has had to put up with harassing and awful phone calls. Some of them have had people go to their residence and put notes on their door,” says Gladu.

The MP understands people are angry with her decision but “the reality is that they had nothing to do with my decision to cross the floor.”

Gladu says office was closed after the incident, as recommended by the House of Commons Sergeant at Arms and security has been upgraded. But she admits “people are afraid to come back to the office… because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The office staff has been offered more security, including a detail outside the office, which Gladu says they are considering.

“I really wish that people would quit doing illegal things,” Gladu added.

“I’m in Ottawa, so I’m not there, they’re not punishing me, they’re punishing my staff and they’re punishing the people that need the services that the office provides,” she said.

The London man charged with mischief and wearing a disguise with intent has been released to appear in court at a later date.
