The young man they call the P-Town Scrapper was among four people honoured by the Toastmasters of Petrolia as Hometown Heros.

Cathy Tong presented the awards to four people whose dedication to the community and volunteerism may not otherwise be recognized. She organized the contest saying she wanted to honour people in Petrolia and area who do not normally seek the spotlight.

“The strongest nominations tell of a quiet, consistent dedication and not a single headline moment,” said Tong.

When introducing Nathaniel Farkus – the P-Town Scrapper, Tong said, “there was no way I could say no this nomination.”

Farkus plays an integral role in supporting food security, collecting scrap metal and other recyclable materials with his father. Farkus then donates some of the money he earned to the Petrolia Community Refrigerator.

Larry Leckie was also recognized for his leadership serving as the chair and media spokesman for the Petrolia Community Refrigerator. The organization makes food available to individuals experiencing food insecurity 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“It is under his leadership and direction that he has made Petrolia Community Refrigerator thrive since the fall of 2021,” said Tong of Leckie.

Among those nominated was Donna Myler, who volunteers at the Boomers Club held Thursday at lunchtime. She can be found doing set up, clearing tables and cleaning up during the weekly event at the Oil Heritage District Community Centre.

Myler also volunteers at Meadowview Villa where she works to ensure residents remain connected to the community. Tong also called Myler “a champion of local culture” for volunteering at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia.

Earle Woolaver was another Hometown Hero. Woolaver is the head leader of Petrolia Scouting and has been a mentor within the Scouting movement for almost 50 years. He has led Beavers, Cub Scouts, as well as mentored adult leaders. He also organizes the Scouts annual Apple Day.

Woolaver has also volunteered with the Petrolia and Enniskillen Agricultural Society and has participated in the local fall fair every year.
