June 29 is going to be a big day in Alvinston.

That’s when the new concrete floor in the arena at the Brooke-Alvinston-Inwood Community Centre will be poured.

Since April, construction crews have been working on the nearly $2 million project to replace the ice-making pipes and floor. The
municipality received a provincial grant for about half of the project.

Brooke-Alvinston is also working to raise as much as it can to offset the costs. Clerk-Administrator Janet Denkers says so far about $411,000 has been raised in the community.

While the fundraising continues, the municipality received some good news from the Minister of Sport in Ontario. Brooke-Alvinston requested lift gate and dasher boards be installed. They were not originally part of the project.

The ministry approved the $410,000 cost and provided a grant for half of it.

While this year’s Canada Day events won’t be in the arena, staff is hopeful the new floor will be ready for use for the hockey season.
