Cancellations and warnings as heavier smoke moves into Lambton Thursday

July 16, 2026

Lambton County’s skies are smokier Thursday as the wind shifts blowing smoke from wildfires in Northern Ontario to our region.

The smoke moved into southern Ontario Wednesday, causing hazy skies and health concerns.

Environment Canada has issued an Orange Air Quality Alert saying during heavy smoke conditions, everyone’s health is at risk regardless of their age or health status. Sarnia-Lambton’s air quality index is at 10+, which indicates the worst air quality measured.

Environment Canada says you should limit time outdoors, reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events.

Because of the heavy smoke, The Town of Petrolia has closed all of its recreational facilities including the Splash Pad and ball diamonds. The Sarnia Legion has cancelled this week’s Catch the Ace event, sparing the people who line up throughout the downtown to vie for a chance to win the jackpot which now sits at $4.1 million. And the Inn of the Good Shepherd’s Mobile Market stops Thursday have been cancelled.

Environment Canada says you may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough in the wildfire smoke. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.

People more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke, including people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and people who work outdoors, should avoid strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.
