Lambton Public Health says it has discovery a mosquito with West Nile Virus in a trap in Petrolia.
It’s the first infected bug public health has found this summer. Traps are set around the county to determine the presence of West Nile Virus in the area.
Public health started testing for the virus in mosquitos in 2002 when it was first detected in Canada. It has been doing surveillance every year since then.
There have been no human cases so far this year in Lambton
Public Health Ontario says there have been three reported human cases of West Nile virus
as well as 65 positive mosquito pools across the province this year.
West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people do not get sick. Those who do become ill usually experience mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, skin rash, or muscle aches.
Fewer than one per cent of people infected with the virus become seriously ill.
