Courtright stop signs, lights to cost $20K

November 29, 2024

Lambton County will spend about $20,000 to improve four intersections along Courtright Line.

There have been several calls to improve safety along Courtright Line after a number of accidents in the last two years.

Most recently, two people died on the Thanksgiving Weekend at the corner of Courtright and Mandaumin Line.

That prompted Kailey Dalgety to start an online petition to get municipal and county officials to do something about the intersection. Over 2,500 people signed it.

At its October meeting, council approved upgrading a number of intersections where there have been fatalities.

In a report to council, Jason Cole, manager of development and infrastructure, says additional oversized Stop signs will be placed on the left-hand side of Petrolia Line, Inwood, Kimball and Courtright Roads on the northbound and southbound sides.

The county will also be putting red flashing beacon lights on the stop signs at Inwood Road.

Both Petrolia Line and Kimball Road already have overhead flashing beacons.

Cole writes the Ontario Traffic Manual encourages the use of extra signage at intersections “only in special circumstances.

“Beacons should continue to be used with considerable discretion, as over-use of these devices may lead to being disregarded by motorists.”

The additions will cost about $20,000. They will be installed when the materials and staff time are available says Cole.
