Warwick’s mayor wants to governments to ‘buy Canadian’

February 5, 2025

Warwick Township Mayor Todd Case wants to make sure Lambton County is buying as many Canadian products as possible.

The request comes just days after US President Donald Trump gave a month’s reprieve from a threatened a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods coming into the US.

At Wednesday’s county council meeting, Case asked county administrators to prepare a report on the county’s purchasing policies and how many Canadian items the county uses.

“We just went through a situation here with the threat of tariffs of 25 per cent on our country’s (goods) in the United States, I just wonder if we’ve ever taken a look at what we buy, where we buy it from,” he said

“I think it’s very important that a government body like ourselves, leads by example, (and) tries to buy as much Canadian content as possible.

“Like most people, I hope that this is perhaps done. I really don’t think it is, but I think it would be important for us to really try to support Canadian-made products here at the County of Lambton.

Sarnia City/County Councillor Brian White agreed saying it would be a good idea to “do a deep dive into where else we can continue to support local and support Canadian first.”

This is not the first time Case has raised the issue. He questioned Warwick Township staff about the amount of American products it may have to purchase.

There are three vehicles in the township’s budget which potentially could come from the US and be subject to tariffs. That, says Case, has the potential to cost the local government thousands of dollars.
