Warwick Mayor Todd Case says Sarnia should tell Lambton County where supportive housing can be built.
The comment came Wednesday during a discussion about the new 50-unit supportive housing complex on George Street. The county gave the land to Indwell for the project. Neighbours found out after the deal was done.
Sarnia City/County Bill Dennis – who originally approved the land transfer during an in camera meeting – wanted the decision reconsidered. Council turned down the idea.
Then Sarnia City/County Councillor Chrissy McRoberts, asked council to direct staff to meet with residents in areas proposed for public housing before the decision is made. She said the county was not being transparent now.
That also failed with Dennis suggesting county politicians can’t be held accountable for housing decisions at the polls and were hoping city residents would move to the rural communities.
Case was offended saying “City of Sarnia, you go back and find places for these units of housing and I will do my best to honour that,” adding the city keeps turning down plans even though Sarnia is the community which needs supportive housing.
“We keep going round and round…we have to be proactive,” says Case.
