As school starts OPP urges drivers, parents to remember ways to stay safe
September 2, 2025
Lambton OPP are offering some tips for safety as the new school year starts.
Police urge drivers to slow down and be on your toes in school zones watching for kids walking to school or on bikes. You’re also reminded that the amber lights flashing on a school bus are an indication a stop is near. Drivers must stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended or face a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.
Parents are asked to encourage their kids to pay attention as they travel. Remind them to stay seated in the bus, waiting for the bus to stop before getting on or off and crossing the street only when it is safe.
If your child rides a bike to school, make sure they’re wearing a helmet and following the rules of the road and looking both ways before crossing the street.
OPP in Lambton will increase their patrols in the school zones as kids head back.
“Every driver plays a role in keeping children safe this school year. Whether it’s stopping for a school bus, staying alert while driving through school zones, or reducing distractions behind the wheel, your choices matter. A few extra moments of patience can make all the difference in keeping our children safe.,” says Insp. Ross Stuart, Lambton OPP Interim Detachment Commander in a news release.
