BRIEFLY: Nesbitt returned to Spitfires, McLaughlin scores first OHL goal

October 1, 2025

Jack Nesbitt has been returned to the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires from the Philadelphia Flyers training camp.

Nesbitt, the Lambton Jr. Sting grad, was the 12th overall pick by the Flyers at the NHL draft earlier this year. Nesbitt, who has family ties to Alvinston and Petrolia, is expected to make his season debut with the Spits on Thursday at home against the Niagara Ice Dogs.

Corunna’s Johnny McLaughlin scored a pair of third period goals, including his first career tally in the OHL, to lead the Windsor Spitfires to a 4-0 win over Sudbury last Thursday night.

The Spits first round pick in April from the Lambton Jr. Sting was chosen the first star of the game.

Jacob Lassaline has been traded but will remain a Star. The Petrolia product and graduate of the Lambton Jr. Sting has been dealt from the St. Thomas Stars of the Greater Ontario Hockey League to the North Middlesex Stars of the PJHL.

The 17-year-old scored in his first game with North Middlesex in a win Friday in Port Stanley. The North Middlesex roster also includes goalie Sean Shanahan of Watford and Mooretown’s Brady Hutton.

The month of September was not kind to the Sarnia Legionnaires.  The team fell to 0-6 with losses to LaSalle and Stratford last week.  Sarnia is home to Cambridge on Thursday at Pat Stapleton Arena.  Game time is 7:10.  The Legionnaires travel to Caledonia on Saturday.

LCCVI improved to 3-0 in LKSSAA junior girls’ A/AA basketball this season with a 41-16 win at home over John McGregor on Monday. North Lambton tops the senior girls’ A/AA standings, also at 3-0, after beating Wallaceburg at home, 50-23 on Monday.

Wyoming’s Noah Myers and his Montgomery Biscuits came up just short in losing the best-of-three Southern League AA baseball championship last week. The speedy outfielder did not play in the decisive game. He was 4-for-10 in the playoffs with three RBI and a stolen base in three games played.

Petrolia’s Gracie Harse scored on a sacrifice fly by Wyoming’s Julia Boelens in the ninth inning as Lambton College beat Humber, 3-2 in OCAA women’s softball last Sunday in Sarnia.  The Lions swept the doubleheader with a 7-1 victory in game two. The Lady Lions travel to Kitchener for two games against Conestoga on Thursday.

Ryan Macko and Jim Joncas are the latest area golfers to join the hole-in-one club.  Macko recently aced number three at Forest while Joncas had his big shot on number seven at Arkona.
