A committee hoping to spur the Town of Petrolia to build a second ice pad is looking for public input.
A year ago, hockey moms Kelly Bailey and Lisa Vanderwall asked town council to consider a second ice pad at the Greenwood Recreation Centre since ice time was at a premium. They said the growth of girls’ hockey, in part, was spurring the need for more ice time.
Councillors were aware of the constant struggle for prime time ice but said it is a big project and would not happen overnight.
Deputy Mayor Joel Field suggested at the time the project could take five to 10 years.
Instead, the town set up a committee to look at the possibilities.
A new community group – the Community Access and Recreation Expansion Committee or CARE – has formed and are launching a survey.
The group is “fighting for a second ice pad to increase availability of ice.”
They’re also interested in creating an indoor walking track and a gymnasium/community centre for pickleball, events and a multi-use space.
The questionnaire asks if people are interested in Greenwood being renovated and expanded, what they would like to see included, and what location other than the Greenwood Recreation Centre would people like to see a facility located.
