OPP preparing for long weekend traffic
September 2, 2021
Lambton OPP are gearing up for what is expected to be a busy weekend.
And police are urging people to be cautious as they head out for their long weekend fun.
So far this year, 176 people have died in fatal collisions on OPP patrolled roads. Police say many were preventable and can be attributed to poor driving.
Police believe 47 of the deaths involved excessive speed, 33 was because of inattentive driving, 29 people weren’t wearing seatbelts and 22 people died in drunk driving accidents.
Fourteen people died in off-road vehicle deaths.
The OPP Marine Patrol will also be on Lake Huron and the St. Clair River this weekend. Officials say 23 people have died in boating accidents.
Falling overboard and capsized vessels remain the primary causes the fatalities, with the risk to vessel occupants increasing dramatically when they do not wear a lifejacket. Wearing this life-saving equipment is the most important thing you can do while boating and paddling.
