Lambton ‘in the driver’s seat’ as province eyes nuclear power in Courtright
Corunna marking 200 years of history today
May 23, 2023
Corunna will be celebrating its 200th anniversary this afternoon.
The St. Clair Township community was first surveyed as a possible site for
Canada’s capital in 1823. St. George’s Square, near the railroad tracks on Hill Street, marks what would have been the centre of the city.
The area as it stands now, along with adjacent ball diamonds is part of a ten acre site that would have been the location of the parliament buildings had Corunna been chosen as the capital city.
Tracy Kingston heads up a group of volunteers who are organizing activities to celebrate the milestone. The first event is this afternoon at St. George’s Square on Hill Street. Local leaders will rededicate the newly renovated monument to the survey and 325 Corunna area school children will sing O Canada in three languages.
Today’s event at the square starts at 1 pm.
A street festival is also being planned for Sept. 23.
