St Philip’s student wins big at national fair

June 13, 2025

The Independent

Ben Harper made a splash at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Fredericton taking home a bronze medal.

The Grade 8 student from St. Philip’s in Petrolia presented his climate-focused project called A Wavy Problem – Navigating the Surges of Climate Change last week and won a bronze medal in his division.

The Petrolia student tested six different offshore wave defenses, which could reduce shoreline erosion, with a device he created which simulated the same wave.

Harper says while his findings won’t stop the rising sea levels, it could help design moveable structures to help deflect storm surges in the future.

Harper was one of 390 students at the event. And he wasn’t the only Lambton County winner.

Mustafa Arif, a Grade 9 student at Northern, received a silver medal for his AI based project and Cyndi Rayson, a Grade 9 student at St. Pat’s, received a bronze medal for her project The Cost of Colour which looked at the use of dye in food.

Remembering Croton

July 12, 2025

Heather Wright/The Independent Harold Snary stands under a tree in the postal village of Croton. Those standing with him see a new, siding-clad school and church, a few homes and the traffic whizzing down Oakdale Road.
