A new but familiar face will be behind the bench when the Petrolia Squires open their inaugural season in the Ontario Elite Hockey League next month.
A former assistant coach with the Flyers a decade ago, Brad Riley is familiar with many players now wearing Squires’ colours.
“Though he officially stepped away from coaching just two months ago, it was clear the game wasn’t done with him,” said the Squires in a prepared statement.
“Known for his passion, his ability to teach life lessons through hockey, and his dedication to the players he coaches, Riley now brings that experience and leadership back to Petrolia.”
Riley, named coach of the year by the Lambton Jr. Sting organization in 2020 has developed several players who have gone on to play junior hockey. The list includes recent first round pick Jack Nesbitt of the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Squires will hold an open tryout at Greenwood on Friday, Sept. 19 from 8-11 p.m. Registration information is available on the team’s Facebook page. Petrolia begins its OEHL season at home against Tavistock on Friday, Oct. 17.
