Stratford man charged after stabbing in Sarnia

A Stratford man is facing six charges including aggravated assault after a man was stabbed in Sarnia.

City police say early Sat. Jan 17, police were called to Somerset Cresent and found a man with a serious stab wound to his upper leg. Police say the man was bleeding heavily and police provided life-saving first aid until paramedics arrived.

Police then received a call from a neighbour saying they could see a suspicious man hiding behind a car. Officers arrested the man.

Police seized what appears to be a kitchen knife at the basement apartment.

The victim was taken to hospital and had surgery. He’s still in critical condition.

The suspect, a 26-year-old man from Stratford, was also treated for a laceration to his forearm that required stitches.

Police charged Govind Gopakumar with possession of a dangerous weapon, uttering threats to cause bodily harm, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and assault.

He was remanded in custody after a bail hearing.
