Warwick’s mayor wants to be clear; the township will not be providing a grant to help Brooke-Alvinston rebuild its arena’s ice-making.
Brooke-Alvinston is planning a $1.9 million replacement of the arena floor this summer and it hopes surrounding municipalities will contribute to the project since its users come from outside the municipality. Both Warwick and Dawn-Euphemia received letters asking for a contribute of $75,000 toward the project.
Warwick council received the letter and took no action.
And Mayor Todd Case said the township – which completed its own $10 million complex in 2022, raising $2 million from the community – won’t be making a donation.
“We share arenas with (East Lambton)minor hockey,” said Case, pointing out the communities already work together to make sure each arena is well used.
“Brooke-Alvinston didn’t provide any funding for our new community hall nor would we expect them to,” he said. “We support them, obviously trying to improve their own arena…but we’re not going to do it financially…It was very surprising to us that they would make such an ask of us.”
