Flooding possible over until Friday says conservation authority
January 3, 2023
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority says there is a potential for flooding until Friday. Here is the advisory issued Tuesday.
Highlights:
- 15-40 mm of rain over next two days
- Saturated soils; increased runoff and ponding possible
- Elevated water levels, potential for flooding
A low pressure system tracking into Southern Ontario has prompted a rainfall warning from Environment Canada. Beginning today and continuing through Wednesday, rainfall amounts upwards of 40 mm are possible and may be heavy at times.
Water levels across the watershed remain elevated and the ground generally saturated from last week’s rainfall and snowmelt. Additional precipitation to the system is anticipated to further elevate water levels with the potential for minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, parks and fields. Increased runoff and ponding are possible.
Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
This message will remain in effect until Friday, January 6, 2023 unless otherwise updated.
